Horse Camp

Our goal is to provide a safe place for both youth and horses to participate; to bring kids together to let them meet new friends; and to give them the opportunity to learn about each other and their horses to be able to root each other on when it comes to be show time!

Staff:   We will have several youth counselors and adult chaperones, including a nurse, committed to assisting the camp.  We welcome parents to stay and watch during the day, but only approved 4-H Leaders will be allowed to stay overnight.  With the exception of a clinician, the entire program will be planned and run by our youth, with the guidance and supervision of adult leaders.  There will be opportunities for older youth to assist in leading activities and groups of younger youth.

Horse or no horse:  This camp is designed for a mixture of youth with and without horses. Due to the nature of horses, we cannot guarantee those without horses any riding time. For those who do not, or cannot bring a horse, there will be opportunities to groom and do ground work with horses.  Youth with horses can choose to share their horse during activities for this purpose. (This is optional. Please let your youth or our leaders know if you do not want others working or grooming your horse.) There will be a limited number of horses brought in as well, for this purpose.

Activities:  The activities and clinics are still a work in progress.  These won’t be finalized until we have a list of participants with their skill levels and ages.  Some activities may include safety, grooming, getting ready for a show, hippology, showmanship, painting model horses, mop horses, trail ride in the parking lot, games and tie dying t-shirts.  If you have any requests or ideas, we would love to hear them.  On Saturday night, there will be a movie in the cow barn. The movie has not been decided and there is a suggestion line for this on the registration.

Camping:  We will be setting up camp on the west side of the fairgrounds.  We encourage parents to bring and set up tents for their youth.  They may share with friends. Campers are for chaperones only. During the check in, Sam Johnson will be coordinating the setup of tents and campers.  If your youth does not have either, we can find another youth to share their tent.  We also have a limited number of tents to borrow, but we need to know this ahead of time.  Please be sure your youth has appropriate sleeping equipment for the weather.

Thank you,

Sam Johnson
